📢[RECAP] Y4E-SEA at the I-ACT Workshop Programme for Young Climate Leaders in Indonesia

Updated: Sep 22, 2023

15-16 September, Jakarta, Indonesia

On 15-16 September, we have collaborated with the Italian Embassy in Jakarta and the Society of Renewable Energy (SRE) to host a two-day Inaugural Workshop “Italy-IRENA Action for Climate Toolkit (I-ACT) for 50 young energy leaders to learn more about energy-climate nexus, and facilitate a global network of climate champions. The event was supported by the European Union Delegation to Indonesia as a part of EU Green Diplomacy Week Indonesia 2023, and took place at the Istituto Italiano di Cultura in Jakarta. Among all the received bursaries from the EU Delegation in Indonesia, five of them are from different provinces in Indonesia: Malang, Ngawi, Makassar, Balikpapan, and Bali. They all gathered in Jakarta to learn more about sustainable energy transition, and how to translate their passion into impactful actions.

The role of the youth in the energy transition movement and the importance of the accumulation of small climate actions have been highlighted by Mr Stéphane Mechati, Minister Counsellor, Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of the EU Delegation to Indonesia “Commitment is the key to create a greener future. We need youth as transition makers, and drivers of change. Engage in conversations with your family across all generations, neighbours, friends, even with people in a coffeeshop about the importance of energy transition and climate action. Take every opportunity to talk about sustainable practices. Discuss the challenges and bring new ideas for a change. Advocate for both collective or individual actions, whether it’s energy saving, efficiency, or using public transport.

Also, in the workshop, Mr Roberto Carniel, Scientific Attaché of Italian Embassy to Indonesia expressed the strong support from the Italian Embassy to Indonesia through Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) and his belief on the impact that the workshop could deliver to all the young energy enthusiasts “I am very happy that I-ACT is dedicated to Piero Angela, a great scientific journalist, able to trigger climate change debates on Italian TV as soon as 1986. I-ACT is just one of the green Italian efforts as the country fully aware that the climate change is a global problem that does not respect state boundaries. This is why Italy also supports the Just Energy Transition Partnership for Indonesia.” In the event, Mr Adam Adiwinata, IRENA representative for Indonesia, also sent encouraging words to all the participants to learn more and amplify the key messages to their respective communities.

The launching of I-ACT took place on 18th December 2022 as part of the “Global Days” initiative endorsed by the Directorate General for Global Affairs (DGMO) of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI). The programme consists of first phase online train-of-trainers (TOT) activity delivered energy experts from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) to the selected Peer Educators from different countries all over the world. In Indonesia, we are proud to have Amira Bilqis - the co-founder of Y4E-SEA to become the Peer Educator to conduct workshops to the young who are interested in energy-climate nexus, and taking concrete actions to address global energy issues. Being one of the co-organiser of the workshop, Amira has expressed her appreciation to all the participants, and emphasised on the collaboration among countries, and young people for a more sustainable future "I-ACT has been brought from Italy to Indonesia as the program aims to inspire a new generation of leaders who can shape a more sustainable and resilient future for themselves and their communities. This event from Italy, EU, Y4E-SEA, and SRE reflects our shared commitment to promoting renewable energy as a key solution for climate action and calls for the replication and dissemination of this toolkit to get across many more Indonesian youth."
